What a builder-grade garage slab brings
A garage slab may show trowel marks, saw-cut control joints, hairline cracks, oil stains and patches. Grinding removes surface staining and trowel marks, but it will not remove deep oil, fill cracks by itself or flatten a floor. Control joints are placed to guide cracking, so they stay and are usually filled.
Before polishing we check the surface hardness, because the polishing specification asks for a Mohs hardness greater than 4, and a weak surface may not take a good polish. A test spot shows what the floor will look like before the whole garage is ground.
Finish options
The look, cream or salt-and-pepper, depends on what the slab holds. Satin gives a calmer, more even sheen and a higher polish reflects more. Dye can be added for a charcoal, grey or warm tone, as described on our page on stained and dyed concrete floors.
Whatever the finish, the joints and any cracks will still be visible, and a quote gives you the sheen and look to expect, not a guarantee of how the slab will cut.
Oil, chemicals and wet floors
Polished concrete is not chemical containment. Craftsman Concrete Floors notes that predictable chemical exposure, such as battery charging, may call for a chemical-resistant coating instead. Clean up spills promptly.
Water, oil and grease can make polished concrete slick, and a glossy surface is not proof of grip. A mat inside the door and a lower sheen by a wet area help.
Garage floor questions
How much does it cost to polish a garage floor?
The cost depends on the size, the slab’s condition, how much repair and prep it needs, the sheen and whether color is added. We quote after looking at the floor.
Is polished concrete better than epoxy for a garage?
Neither is better for every garage. Polishing leaves no film to peel and keeps the concrete’s look; a coating can resist chemicals and stains better. Tell us how the garage is used and we will say whether polishing suits it.
Can an existing garage slab be polished?
Usually yes if the surface is hard enough. Oil stains, cracks and old patches stay visible to some degree, and a test spot shows how they look.
Color in a garage is explained under stained and dyed concrete floors. A workshop floor with no need for shine could suit grind and seal concrete floors; the Avondale Polished Concrete home page shows the other choices.
